CLASS DESCRIPTIONS AND COSTS

Mindstorm® NXT

Grades 4-8

Absolutely no third graders accepted in these classes. Students who are not ready for the class will either not learn much or leave the class with the impression that robotics is just ‘too hard.’
Students will have an awesome time building robots that can navigate obstacle courses and respond to a multitude of sensors, including motion, touch, and sound.

Our students begin work with the the LEGO® Mindstorms base kit to master the programming of basic movements, and then progress to more difficult challenges. They will build robots that can navigate mazes, shoot ping pong balls, and more.
Mindstorms is currently our most advanced robotics offering. We recommend our LEGO® Robotics class for beginners and our Robo Challenge class for intermediate to advanced elementary school students.

• Tuition: $110

• There are no material fees.
• Grades 4-8 only.
• This class meets after school for four weeks, once per week, for 90 minutes.

• There are a maximum number of 8 students allowed per class.

• We provide one robotics kit and one computer for each pair of students to use.
• Areas of exploration: Programming, Robotics, and Logic

Video Game Design with Gamestar Mechanic

Grades 3-8

Using Gamestar Mechanic’s easy to follow tutorials, you will ultimately design, build, and publish your own video game. The cool part is; the learning never stops as you can continue to build on your own time and even after the class is over. Your account stays with you forever!

This is what their website says: Gamestar Mechanic is a game and online community that teaches kids how to design their own games!

Designing games builds:

  • Systems Thinking

  • 21st Century Skills

  • Creative Problem Solving

  • Art and Aesthetics

  • Writing and Storytelling

  • Creates a motivation for STEM learning.

  • Tuition: $75 plus a $5 lab fee that covers lab usage and website membership.

  • This session of classes meets after school for four weeks, once per week, for 60 minutes.

  • Each student will work individually on a lab computer.

  • Your child should be familiar with basic computer skills.

  • ONLY OPEN TO 20 STUDENTS

Robochallenge

Grades 3-6

Did our LEGO® Robotics class leave you wanting more? This class is for you. In Robochallenge, instead of working with step-by-step building directions and sample programs, we’ll start each class with a programming challenge. After meeting that challenge, you will use the robotics kits to design bots to go with your programs.

Bots we have built include factory bots that could drive up to a target, stop before crashing into it, and then back up; as well as all sorts of cars and amusement rides.

One of our favorite challenges: build a bot that can trap one of our Hexbug Hamsters. How would you do that? With a trap door? A closing gate? What robotic device would trigger your trap? A motion sensor? A tilt sensor? How would you program your machine, and why? It’s up to you how to solve the problem.

Our instructors will be there to help you achieve success – presenting different problems each week or two.

• Tuition: $75

• There are no material fees.
• LEGO® WeDo® Robotics is a prerequisite for Robochallenge.

• This class meets after school for four weeks, once per week, for 60 minutes.
• There are a maximum number of 12 students allowed per class.
• We provide one robotics kit and one computer for each student to use.
• Second graders are not allowed.
• Areas of exploration: Teamwork, Independent Problem Solving, Robotics, Programming, and Logic

Young Engineers Challenges

Grades 2-6

This class is geared for boy and girl engineers in grades 2- 6.  Using materials like straws, toothpicks, marshmallows, and etc. students will have the opportunity to study engineering.  They will experience teamwork through hands-on experiments, tasks, and team building exercises.  This project builds students’ skills in critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration, and communication as well as providing opportunities for creativity.

In this class, students will learn basic engineering concepts, while designing and building cool things like towers, bridges, and structures. All engineering tasks take students through the Design Process.  Each engineer takes home everything they build.

Every six-week session is different so your child can repeat the class without repeating the projects. Not that repetition is bad, it's a key to understanding the processes behind the topic being taught.

• Tuition: $75 plus a $5 non-refundable lab fee

• This class meets after school for six weeks, once per week, for 60 minutes.

Kreative Kids

Grades 4-6

This class is geared for boy and girl artists in grades 4-6.  Students will have the opportunity to study a variety of art techniques.

Students will create an art portfolio that includes projects dealing with color, symmetry, line drawing and mosaics.  These techniques will help build students’ skills in creative thinking, artistic communication as well as providing opportunities for creative vision.

• Tuition: $70 plus a $10 non-refundable lab fee

• This class meets after school for six weeks, once per week, for 90 minutes.

Lego® WeDo® Robotics

Grades 2-6

This is our core class where beginners learn to build and program robots using LEGO® Education’s award winning WeDo robotics and programming software.

Working individually, students follow step-by-step on-screen instructions to build their robots, and then build a suggested program to get their robots working. After that, students who are ready can build more complicated programs involving motion or tilt sensors.

Towards the end of the session, we challenge the students to use what they have learned so far to design their own programmable car that can move without being touched. Even our biggest LEGO® robotics buffs find this extremely challenging, but we work with them to help them succeed.

If the students like the challenge, we suggest our follow-up LEGO® robotics class, Robo Challenge!

• Tuition: $75

• There are no material fees.
• This class meets after school for four weeks, once per week, for 60 minutes.
• There are a maximum number of 12 students allowed per class.

Master Builder Lego® Stop Motion Animation

Grades 2-6

How cool was The Lego Movie?

Does your child want to be a Master Builder? These animation projects follow five (5) basic steps:

1. Develop and storyboard an idea

2. Create the characters

3. Build a background

4. Shoot the shots

5. Make a movie (compile and edit)

Students do not need animation experience prior to taking Master Builder Stop Motion Animation. This class is a great introduction into basic video production. Each child will have access to hundreds of LEGO® building elements and mini figures.

  • Tuition: $75, there are no material fees.

  • This session of classes meets after school for four weeks, once per week, for 60 minutes.

  • Each student will have access to a computer, a webcam, and all other required materials.

  • ONLY OPEN TO 12 STUDENTS

We reserve the right to cancel any class that fails to reach a minimum attendance level. If a class is cancelled, the tuition fee will be reimbursed but the lab fee, if any, will not. Thank you for your understanding.

Our goal is to provide exciting programs that will enhance a child's curiosity about the world around them. We are not a day care program. In doing this, we will not tolerate disruptive or abusive behavior by the students. If an instance arises where this kind of behavior is happening, we will talk to both the child and the parent. If the disruptive or abusive behavior persists, the child will not be allowed to return for the remainder of the classes. We hope to never have to enforce this rule, but will not be afraid if we have to.
